MOVIE NEWS – Kevin Costner talks about not wanting to “spoon-feed” those who see the Horizon: An American Saga movies…

“I’m so tired of everybody trying to be so delicate about things.” This is how the director and star of Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter 1, Kevin Costner, put it. Costner’s new western really portrays the Apaches as angry and violent towards the residents of Horizon. This is also clearly shown by the brutal massacre in the film. However, Costner doesn’t want viewers to misunderstand and think that Horizon is another stereotypical depiction of Native Americans. Costner said in an interview with Entertainment Weekly:

“I’m just so tired of everybody trying to be so delicate about things. [The Native Americans] were pissed. I don’t feel like I have to [hold someone’s hand]. ‘Oh my God, here we go again. Indians are the bad guys.’ Of course, they’re not the bad guys. But if you’re going to be limited, if people aren’t willing to watch how something unfolds, I don’t know what to say.”

Horizon centers on fictional characters and takes place in pre- and post-Civil War America, detailing the exploration of the American West.

In the films showing a period of twelve years, the actors playing different characters and their experiences of the pioneering journey leading from their home to a new area are shown.

Costner’s westerns (Wyatt Earp, Dances with Wolves, Open Range) arguably don’t compare to his blockbuster baseball movies over the years. However, the Hollywood icon knows and understands the western genre well. With Yellowstone in the rearview mirror, Costner hopes audiences will understand that Native Americans were angry at the loss of their land and that their portrayal in Horizon was not inappropriate or stereotypical, Costner said in the same interview:

“I’m not interested in spoon-feeding people. The reality is it was one tent too many, and the [Apache] went down there, and they tried to wipe the [settlers] out. Their anger is they’re not able to hunt. They have to go and interact with tribes when they had long ago settled those issues.”
