Is a New Platform Coming soon to Nintendo Switch Online?

Rumors are swirling that the Big N will soon be adding another console to its lineup of games for Switch Online subscribers.

While Nintendo Switch Online will offer a very small taste of games from several older consoles, it won’t have the same extensive offering as its predecessor, the Virtual Console, which was discontinued with the closure of Nintendo’s Wii U and 3DS eShops. In any case, more games from the NES, SNES, Game Boy, Game Boy Color and, at the more expensive level, SEGA Genesis, Game Boy Advance and Nintendo 64 will be available on the big N. (And the Genesis, or Mega Drive, is a bit of an odd choice, as it’s not Nintendo’s platform…)

A user on the Famiboards forum has discovered possible references to a GameCube controller in the customs shipping details (which require registration to view…), which could indicate that GameCube games could be coming to Nintendo Switch Online. The code names and parts are similar to previously released Nintendo Switch Online controllers, leading to further speculation. Another user confirmed the shipping details, but had reservations about their significance. The inclusion of the codenames and parts may just be a coincidence, as no reliable data is available at this time.

In the past, Nintendo has allowed old controllers to be supported on Switch. Some controllers (such as the NES controller) work well in games, but not all in-game features and functions are supported. Support for the GameCube controller could be a simple support feature, possibly for the soon-to-be-released Switch 2, though who knows what the truth may be.

If Nintendo is indeed looking to draw from the Nintendo GameCube’s game offerings, there will be plenty of excellent titles to choose from, as while the platform wasn’t strong in sales, it did have some great titles (such as Eternal Darkness, Super Mario Sunshine, and even Pikmin started on the platform), but all we can do right now is speculate. The Wii was built on GameCube hardware back in the day, so maybe it won’t be too hard to emulate the games.

But it’s not official yet.
