Nintendo Switch 2: Will the Steam Deck be Better in Some Aspects? [VIDEO]

It could be a very strange situation if what we’re hearing about Nintendo’s next-generation console is true, which the company really needs to announce soon if it wants to release it by March 2025…

In the video embedded below, Moore’s Law Is Dead answers a question about the Nintendo Switch 2’s power efficiency and expected performance. According to the YouTuber, the Big N’s new device will have a higher boost clock speed in handheld mode than the original Switch, while also allowing you to use it for longer thanks to better battery life. It will use a fanless cooling solution and consume only 5W in handheld mode, while in docked mode it will consume 15-30W with a much more powerful cooling system in the dock. He compared AMD’s similar 5-nanometer chips to Nintendo’s and says it is an efficient technology because it is designed to be low-power.

According to the leaker, the Switch successor would be able to run all the games the Steam Deck can, but there would be a few key differences. The Nintendo console’s cores likely won’t be as powerful as Valve’s, so games won’t run as well. If the Steam Deck runs something at 90 FPS, the Switch 2’s frame rate would be 60 FPS, and if something runs at 60, the Japanese company’s machine would get 40-45 FPS with VRR (variable frame rate). The console’s GPU supports Nvidia DLSS, so it could run at higher resolutions, and ray tracing could possibly be an option.

The Nintendo Switch 2 could then achieve a higher resolution than the Steam Deck, but the frame rate would not be as good. Of course, this would be a comparison with the CURRENT Valve machine, but Gabe Newell is surely already working on the next generation Steam Deck (the OLED model was just a refresh), and it wouldn’t make much sense to compare the big N machine with other handheld PCs (e.g. Asus ROG Ally, Lenovo Legion Go, or to use an Intel example, MSI Claw…).

The Switch 2 will be officially announced at the end of March, but will likely be available by then.
