PlayStation 4 1.7 update problem reports

The big, long awaited PlayStation 4 1.7 firmware update was released just moments ago, and while it added many new features, tweaks, and bug fixes, it apparently also brought some problems for some PS4 owners.

According to several reports on Reddit, the 1.7 PS4 update has resulted in screen flickering and and black screen issues, among other things. Some users are reporting a black screen after disabling HDCP, which was one of the new features of the 1.7 firmware update.

Other users are reporting random screen flickering, which is likely associated with the HDCP feature as well. Sony added the ability to turn off HDCP, which is a must for those using external video recorders.

As one user puts it: “Ever since I updated my ps4 has been flickering like crazy, even when not attached to my elgato capture card. It seems like once I turn HDCP off, it blinks like a mad man, and won’t stop til I turn it back on. Really confused and disappointed about this.”

These are only initial reports, and it seems that the number of users experiencing problems is severely limited — especially to those turning off HDCP (High Definition Content Protection) to use their own external video recorders. The only fix so far apepars to be to turn HDCP back on.

The PlayStation 4 1.7 firmware update adds the new ShareFactory video editing suite, where players can edit their own videos, add music and commentary, and more.

The 1.7 firmware update also makes it possible to dim the lights on the DualShock 4 controller, although it’s still not possible to turn it off completely.
