Japanese PlayStation 4 sales: almost tripling from last week

The PlayStation 4 wasn’t especially such a big success in Japan as it was in North America and Europe. That’s not to say that it’s not selling well, but the sales numbers and the excitement are not at such scale what they were for the PS2 and PS3.ps4pro.eu_Japan_GTA_V_2Well, last week was a lot better, since the PS4 sold over 68,000 units in Japan, which is a huge increase compared to just 15,000 units the week before. The important reason for the tripling of sales is actually the new Grand Theft Auto 5 bundle, which was released in Japan with a pretty good discount.

Let’s not forget either, that Sony also released the Metal Slime PS4 edition which came bundled with the latest Dragon Quest game, which likely had a positive impact on sales as well.

Still, it’s hard to take lightly the impact of Grand Theft Auto 5: it was without question the bestselling PS4 game last week, selling more than 82,000 copies. ps4pro.eu_Japan_GTA_V_3bNonetheless, while the PS4 was doing well last week in Japan, the sales chart also shows how the console is struggling a bit: GTA 5 was the only PS4 game in the top 20 last week, compared to 5 PS3 games and 4 Wii U games. The 3DS led the pack with 10 games in the top 20.

The Xbox One on the other hand, is practically non-existent in Japan. The console sold just 724 units last week, and 790 units the week before. In fact, the Xbox One was outsold by the Vita TV in Japan.
