Pachter: PS 4’s Project Morpheus could be as big as Guitar Hero

Do you remember Guitar Hero? That was the music game that apparently took the world by fire in the mid-2000s. The game and instruments were selling like crazy and everyone wanted one and talked about. According to Michael Pachter, this could also be the future of PlayStation 4’s virtual reality headset: Project Morpheus.

Michael Pachter, who is a video game industry analyst, is well known for his forecasts in the game industry (especially when it comes to sales and business aspects of gaming), just stated that Project Morpheus could be an important asset for Sony. It might be as important as Guitar Hero was back in the day.

In this episode of GameTrailersBonus Round, which was filmed at the recent PlayStation Experience in Las Vegas, Pachter first states he has doubts about Project Morpheus and its use for games, but then adds:

“I remember in 2005, going down into Kentia Hall and I see this line of 800 people who want to play Guitar Hero. And I’m like: ‘This is amazing.’ And they’re like ‘Yeah and it looks like we’re going to sell 200,000 units’. But obviously, Guitar Hero turned out into something much bigger, selling millions”.

He also added about Project Morpheus: “You’re probably not gonna buy it to play games, you are gonna buy it for the cool content and experience”. He gave the analogy that people don’t buy smartphones to play games, but everyone plays games on smartphones. He thinks that virtual reality will be big for non-games first, which also explains why Facebook spent $2 billion on buying Oculus Rift, the main competitor to Project Morpheus.

Sony will release the Project Morpheus virtual reality set on the PlayStation 4 later this year, likely Fall 2015. Sony said last year that the technology was “85% complete“. As we argued before, the most important thing is to launch the headset with great games in order to attract gamers to spend several hundred dollars on a new technology.
