Mafia III Breaks A Record Despite „Anomalies”!

Mafia III reached a result that we never thought it would achieve.

Between 2K franchises, Mafia III took the lead due to its unprecedented start: it managed to ship 4.5 million copies in its first week, according to The Washington Post. With this result, Mafia III took the throne from franchises such as BioShock, Borderlands, or NBA 2K, which is mostly popular in North America.

However, this performance doesn’t involve the other in-house segment of Take-Two, namely Rockstar: they didn’t publish sales figures in September 2013, when Grand Theft Auto V launched, only one number. It got 800 million dollars (!) in twenty-four hours!

Speaking of GTA, Take-Two published a few numbers about the franchise: Grand Theft Auto V is at 70 million sales, which is five million higher than the previous quarter year. No wonder GTA Online „continues to grow,” meaning a ton of money for Rockstar/Take-Two. NBA 2K17‘s total sales are at 4.5 million, and the Civilization franchise saw a 2 million increase from 35 to 37 million.

Back to Mafia III a bit. Take-Two’s CEO, Strauss Zelnick said the following: „Mafia 3 reviews were lower than we would have liked, but we and our competitors are seeing anomalies in the review systems. But we have had an enormous amount of great reviews and consumers are buying it hand over fist, and that’s what we go by.” (Source: DualShockers)
