Josef Fares (who simply said f*** the Oscars) shared his thoughts regarding game development.
In December, we already wrote about the Lebanese film director turned game director Josef Fares‘ comments at The Game Awards, and it looks like he seriously considers taking a different route from the gaming trends. (His first game, 2013’s Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons was already in such a direction…) Fares was interviewed by the EDGE magazine, and WCCFTech quoted some parts of the interview.
His next game, A Way Out, which will be published by Electronic Arts under the EA Originals label, has the story of two characters with a fixed split screen gameplay. Fares’ work can easily be compared to Telltale Games’ and Quantic Dreams’ games, and regarding the comparison, Josef said the following: „Those games are too passive for me. I would like to have more control. One could say that you control the story, but while you’re doing it and affecting it, in a sense you’re not, you know? A Way Out is not about that. I think the comparison is fine from a cinematic perspective, but not the way you choose your story. This is a hand-tailored story all the way.”
What about emotions? Does he want to follow the footsteps of David Cage (Quantic Dream)? (In short: make the players feel emotions due to experiencing the game.) „That’s not important for me. I just want to make people feel the game. If they cry, or they laugh, or they smile, or they get angry, it doesn’t really matter,” Fares said, who also talked about how the development was difficult for Hazelight, consisting of about thirty people: „From the perspective of the small team we are, it’s been challenging for us. I made six feature films before A Way Out and Brothers, and they’re nothing compared to making a game. It’s way harder. It’s way harder because of many things. When you make a movie, you pretty much have a solid idea of how the product should go; you can plan it better. In a game, you can’t plan that out, especially if you’re doing something that hasn’t been done before.”
Fares also answered the question “why do you do this game?” – his answer follows: „I’m making the game I want to play with my friends. I think playing a story together is an underestimated genre. It doesn’t all have to be run-and-gun, you know?”
A Way Out will be available from March 23 on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC.
