Activision Blizzard Rakes In More Cash Despite A Minor Flaw

Their stocks’ value dropped a bit due to an early report, but everything clicked into place in no time.

Bloomberg reports that Dow Jones News had early financial information „potentially from prior quarters.” It made their stocks fall, which affected Electronic Arts and Take-Two as well, but after correction, everything returned to normal.

The first quarter of 2018 is over, and you can read their financial results here. More records are broken: 1.97 billion dollars of revenue (0.24 up year-on-year), 500 million dollars of net income (64 up), and 78 cents of earnings per share (6 up), despite Activision Blizzard not releasing a game in this quarter!

Microtransactions, DLC, subscriptions, and „live services” generated 1.25 billion dollars of revenue (and King (Candy Crush) with its 285 million monthly users generated 533 million, with Blizzard showing „only” 503), the other 720 million dollars came from game sales. 1.46 billion dollars came via digital sales or transactions, and only 409 million dollars were generated via physical, retail sales. Activision put together 872 million dollars – Call of Duty: WWII’s first quarter was only topped by Black Ops III in the past, and its success made up for the faltering Destiny 2 (whose plans will be discussed separately…). The publisher predicts 1.56 billion for the next quarter and 7.36 billion by the end of 2018.

Of course, Activision Blizzard wants more. Bobby Kotick, the CEO, said the following: „Our 5-year growth plan is in its earliest innings and our greatest challenge remains prioritization of opportunity, which is an enviable challenge to have. We have the finest talents in our industry, and we continue to attract the very best and brightest people drawn to the excitement, opportunity, and rewards our company provides.”

Of course, Call of Duty: Black Ops IIII, which will be revealed properly on May 17, will play a role in it. Collister Johnson, Activision Blizzard‘s Chief Operating Officer, says that this game will be quite innovative (we’ll see about that…) and that its PC port will get „significant dedicated resources and design time” to be up to the standards.

So, the publisher is flying.

Still, she likes puzzle and story-oriented games, like Sherlock Holmes: Crimes & Punishments, which is her favourite title. She also played The Sims 3, but after accidentally killing a whole sim family, swore not to play it again. (For our office address, email and phone number check out our IMPRESSUM)
