We learned a few things about Sucker Punch‘s game.
Brian Flaming, a producer at Sucker Punch, talked more about Ghost of Tsushima, which was shown during Sony’s E3 conference, on the PlayStation Blog. We learned that the game is set in 1274, during the Mongol invasion of Japan, and its story is going to be „an original story set in the world of feudal Japan.” The protagonist is called Jin Sakai, a „strong samurai warrior,” who takes on a journey that will „draw on Japanese history and the iconic traditions of samurai cinema,” and the story will be „a tale of revenge, empowerment, and hope.” Jin will be joined by Masako, a „deadly onna-bugeisha” (a female samurai), whose past is tragic, and it will play a role in her relationship with Jin. They joined forces to save their homeland from the Mongols.
Fleming also said about the E3 video that it wasn’t set on the main path of Ghost of Tsushima – it was meant to be a glimpse into the world Sucker Punch is creating with the goal to „capture a few of the essential visions they have for the game.” Fleming also pointed out the red leaves during the duel between Jin and Masako. They are going to act as metaphors in the game. The first such leaf, which Jin picks up at the beginning of the story, was a touchstone for the developers to create the story, and there are several ideas and concepts that are tied to it.
Nate Fox, the game’s director, revealed that the swordfights are meant to be „lethally precise,” as there’s no wasted energy – the characters are experts, and the devs even hired kendo experts as consultants for the sake of authenticity.
Ghost of Tsushima is going to be one of the last major PlayStation 4-exclusives. It has no release date yet.
