Spider-Man Did Not Get A Graphical Downgrade! [VIDEO]

The „puddlegate” has come to an end.

DigitalFoundry has analysed the retail version of Spider-Man, and they have found out that Insomniac Games‘ PlayStation 4-exclusive did NOT get graphically downgraded. In fact, in some aspects, it got improvements over the E3 2017 build. Let’s see how…

The resolution has jumped significantly on the PlayStation 4 Pro. The average resolution is 2816×1584, and the game’s adaptive resolution moves around between 2560×1368 and 3456×1944, while at the E3 last year, the game ran on 1440p! Insomniac didn’t use the commonly adapted checkerboard technology – instead, they utilised temporal injection. New York’s traffic and pedestrian count have been increased, we can see through the buildings’ windows, and the shadows, lightning both got improved. Spider-Man‘s suit has a more of a natural look than last year’s build (but it might make it look flatter – however, it’s just an artistic change).

The puddles are rendered the same way as last year (screen-space, cube-map reflections), but the retail version has them in a bit of a generic look to save performance. Thus, Insomniac might have automated them. (Their amount, however, is seemingly yet another artistic change as they don’t have an impact on the resolution or the frame-rate).

Spider-Man launches this Friday, exclusively on PlayStation 4.
