Apex Legends: Electronic Arts’ and Respawn’s Free-To-Play Battle Royale Game Launches Out Of Nowhere! [VIDEO]

Respawn announced and also released their free-to-play game that will be their focus.

Apex Legends has a bit of Overwatch taste, as the Legends (the playable characters) have distinct personalities and skills, and, with Blizzard’s FPS, they are all following the „easy to learn but hard to master” thought. Team-Based gameplay, but, as the press release says, the game is also dubbed as a „strategy battle royale”. (They also mention „genre-evolving innovation […] that level up the Battle Royale genre, including Respawn Beacons, Smart Comms, Intelligent Inventory and an all-new way to drop into the action with Jumpmaster deployment.”) There’s loot, too, so you’ll have a ton of cosmetic items, too.

Drew McCoy, Apex Legends‘ lead producer, told Eurogamer the following: „The world thinks we’re making Titanfall 3 and we’re not—this is what we’re making. To try and convince a sceptical audience for months with trailers and hands-on articles, we’re just like, ‘Let the game speak for itself’—it’s the most powerful antidote to potential problems. We’re doing a free to play game, with essentially loot boxes, after we were bought by EA, and it’s not Titanfall 3. It’s the perfect recipe for a marketing plan to go awry, so why have that—let’s just ship the game and let players play.” However, Kotaku reports that Titanfall 3 was in development in the autumn of 2017, and Apex Legends might have been evolved from that project.

Will there be cross-play? „Cross-play is definitely an opportunity; it’s not something at launch. It’s definitely something we’re aware of and interested in. I can’t speak to whether or not we’ve had specific conversations. Right now it’s just like: ‘Let’s launch the game’,” Mackey McCandlish, Respawn‘s design director, told VG247. He added that they plan this game to be active for ten years: „We want this to be a ten-year game. It’s egotistical to say that; they said the same thing when they made Destiny. And with League of Legends, they say: ‘How do we make this something people play forever, not something that trails off a bit over the next ten years?’ There’s so much opportunity in this universe, there’s so much opportunity in this young genre, and I love playing it so much. We play the game for hours every day.

I have already been playing this game in a form close enough to what it is and dying to play more since late 2017 when it started turning into the game it is today. I’m sad when the playtest ends. That’s a first for any game I’ve worked on. I’ve made a lot of games. I tended to work on the story – the campaign more than the multiplayer until we made Titanfall – so I’ve worked on a lot of games that were about putting on a great show: something you consume. And this is the first game I’ve worked on that’s more like the multiplayer I just want to keep playing.”

Here are Apex Legends‘ system requirements:

On PlayStation 4, you don’t need to have a PlayStation Plus-subscription (in fact, they could download a free exclusive pack of items from the PlayStation Store), but on Xbox One, you need to have an Xbox Live Gold-subscription. On PC, you can access Apex Legends via Origin!

Monetization? You can buy the Legends with Apex Coins, the premium currency, but you can earn them via gameplay, too. The cosmetic items can either be received with a battle pass (Fortnite!), via the loot boxes, or by purchasing them in the in-game store.

The game is widely successful – on Twitter, Vince Zampella, the head of Respawn, announced the following: „I’m so overwhelmed right now: Apex Legends broke a million unique players in under 8 hours. […]”

Apex Legends is already available on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC. Indeed, this game lacks the Titans (the giant mechs).
