A reference to Xi Jinping had affected Devotion on Steam badly…

Spiel Times reports that the Taiwan-developed game Devotion has a reference to Xi Jinping, the leader of China. The game has a piece of paper that references Xi, Winnie the Pooh, and the word „moron.” In China, the Christopher Robin movie was banned because the Chinese Internet users have compared Xi to Winnie the Pooh… (we discussed it before)

Red Candle Games, the developers, have posted an apology on Steam, saying that during the game’s development, they have used placeholder text, which ended up staying in Devotion, and the paper was one of these placeholders. It wasn’t removed in time, causing the Steam reviews to tank (especially by Chinese people) by pushing Devotion to 60% negative reviews, and their other game, Detention, also got over two thousand negative reviews. However, it seems there’s more than that – a few gamers pointed out that there’s more commentary towards China; a Spiel Times commenter said that the Xi paper is a „dark magic spell paper, a Chinese equivalent of a having a stabbed voodoo doll”; and a comment on ResetEra points out the cult leader’s name in Devotion is itself a reference to the Chinese people, and their festival is held at the same time as a Chinese national festival.

Let’s not forget: the game was developed in Taiwan. The relationship between China and Taiwan is not the best (the former considers the latter as part of the country)…
