Will Days Gone Be Unpredictable?

Sony Interactive Entertainment Bend Studio says their PlayStation 4-exclusive game will have so much (or, as they say, astronomical) permutations that everyone might have a unique experience in Days Gone

WCCFTech has taken a few quotes from the May issue of the EDGE magazine, said by John Garvin, the game’s director and writer: „All the systems come into play in a way that makes predictability impossible, and that’s what makes the gameplay experience awesome. The permutations, how many different kinds of things that can happen, are just astronomical. And to make that work, you have to have all the systems there and in play. You can’t really tune the game if you don’t have the melee system quite done yet, because then you can’t really tune the crafting system. All these systems have to be in play at the same time, and that means all of them have to be done and in the game and working. That’s what takes the time.”

As the game has been in development for six years (!), it’s understandable what Garvin says. The unpredictability in the title refers to the big variety in the gameplay, meaning it might not be repeated between two players. The issue here is that Sean Murray, the head of Hello Games and the creator of No Man’s Sky, has said something similar in 2016, but in just mere moments (!), two people ended up on the same planet. (And he continues to expand the game with free updates, props to that – the next update will bring PlayStation VR and SteamVR support.)

Fuel management was also mentioned in the interview – Deacon St. John, the protagonist of Days Gone will have to upgrade his bike (and also to keep it in one piece), and since it will need fuel to work, it cannot be ignored at all. „Fuel management is not something you see often in games, because it’s very tricky to balance. You don’t want to punish the player, having them constantly run out of gas and making it a chore. But on the other hand, you want that tension that comes from that constant fear of ‘Oh my god, am I going to run out of gas,” Garvin added.

The PlayStation 4-exclusive Days Gone will launch on April 26.
