Did Microsoft’s Next-Gen Plans Change?

It’s possible that Microsoft might have slightly modified its plans regarding the next console generation.

Previously, we wrote about how the Redmond-based company is rumoured to work on two next-gen Xboxes: with the Scarlett product family, there would be a weaker, streaming-oriented Lockhart model as an Xbox One S replacement, and the Xbox One X’s position would be taken by a stronger model, codenamed Anaconda. However, there was only one console revealed at E3… and that was likely the Anaconda model, as Microsoft teased it to be a very strong console.

Brad Sams from Thurrott claims that Microsoft narrowed its plans for development, meaning there is only one next-gen Xbox in development. What’s the reason behind the change? The developers found it hard to develop for two Xbox SKUs. Many devs focused on the Lockhart, not utilising the advantages of the Anaconda, which wouldn’t be a clever idea, as Sony’s next-gen PlayStation, which might be called PlayStation 5, is not going to be a weak console. And with the disappearance of Lockhart, Microsoft wants to push the more casual players who need no strong console towards its Project xCloud streaming service. We should believe Sams because he was the first person to write about the two next-gen Xbox models…

„Right now, we’re focused on Project Scarlett, and what we [showed] on stage,” Phil Spencer, the head of Xbox, said, which is why Sams might be onto something. Of course, this is not official at the moment, but indeed, Microsoft only talked about the console that is set to come out at the end of 2020.

Let’s hope we won’t see in three-four years that another mid-generation console is launched, like how the PlayStation 4 Pro and the Xbox One X came out in the current console generation.
