Game Consoles’ Tariffs Are Off The Table For Now: No Price Increase Inbound!

Donald Trump, the president of the United States of America – after meeting Xi Jinping, the paramount leader of China – decided not to introduce another round of tariffs that could involve the video game consoles.

The sword of Damocles has been hanging above the consoles for a month, as they are mostly manufactured in China (with the exception of the Nintendo Switch for a small part, as its production has been moved partially to South East Asia), and the tariff war between the US and China could have involved the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch in a planned round of new tariffs, meaning their price could have been hit with a maximum of 25% increase, but it might not happen any time soon. (We’re not sure if the console tariff is off the table for good yet.)

„I had a great meeting with President Xi of China yesterday, far better than expected. I agreed not to increase the already existing tariffs that we charge China while we continue to negotiate. China has agreed that, during the negotiation, they will begin purchasing large amounts of agricultural product from our great farmers. At the request of our high-tech companies, and President Xi, I agreed to allow Chinese company Huawei to buy products from them which will not impact our national security. Importantly, we have opened up negotiations again with China as our relationship with them continues to be a very good one. The quality of the transaction is far more important to me than speed. I am in no hurry, but things look very good! There will be no reduction in the tariffs currently being charged to China,” Trump wrote via several tweets overnight.

„I agreed not to increase the already existing tariffs that we charge China” is the key quote, meaning the end-of-May proposals will not be introduced, and thus, the game console prices will not increase throughout the US and probably Europe. If we’ll get a price increase in the next generation, that might be because of the technology (500 USD/EUR seems realistic for the next-gen PlayStation and Xbox).
