Khurram Nawaz Gandapur, the general secretary of Pakistan Awami Tehreek, has made a dumb mistake.
„Narrow escape of an aircraft which could have ended in a great disaster. Miraculous save by the pilot’s presence of mind,” he wrote on Twitter, but this tweet has since been deleted. Of course, the Internet did not forget, and an archive has it saved with a few answers. Basically, everyone laughed at him, because he didn’t realize the video he shared was from Grand Theft Auto V! In this video, an Airbus A380 plane just barely avoids an accident with a truck and safely flies away.
Above, you can see another account making the same mistake: „Terrorist attack in Algeria, which fails to work because of the pilot’s immense skill.” The video is from YouTube, namely an account called The UiGamer, who makes montages of aeroplanes crashing and performing emergency landings in Grand Theft Auto V.
Gandapur posted the video to 67 thousand, while Physics-astronomy.org posted it to 47 thousand followers. Both accounts should have done some research to see what they post, as they made a fool of themselves. The politician got more flak (especially because he’s a public figure), and he made not only Pakistan laugh at him, but also half the world! Congratulations!
We need to talk about deepfake videos, though – these are modified videos via deep learning that change the original recording into something that you might not instantly recognize as a fake. While it’s funny to see someone share something with no research, but imagine what happened if Gandapur had a deepfake video where he sends his political rivals to hell and back. The subject is no joke, and it should be taken entirely seriously, as a harmless video could hurt our reputation.
