The Last Guardian’s Creator, Fumito Ueda Is Looking For A Publisher

Fumito Ueda is looking for a partner for his next game.

ICO, Shadow of the Colossus, The Last Guardian – Fumito Ueda was these games’ director and lead designer, so we can’t say that he lacks talent. He told Polygon some information about his next game, but he mainly talked about the Kowloon Nights investment fund. Let’s see what Ueda said about his next project: „The extensive prototyping period was worthwhile and we are making very good progress. I believe this project will showcase both unfamiliar and familiar elements in one. [The developers, genDESIGN] can grasp the idea by just showing a grey-box level which eliminates the need for us to prepare an extensive presentation. That valuable time is spent working on an actual game instead. When a partner isn’t as familiar with production and the steps of creating a game, there is a tendency to care more about the visuals, thus spending extra time perfecting that aspect rather than the core of the game’s design,” Ueda said.

He revealed that the game’s funding stage is shortly wrapping up (he can get 0.5 to 5 million dollars out of it), and he is now looking for a publisher. He could work more on this game, as he focused on the main concept instead of the graphics. Still, it’s weird he talks about publishing, as the three previously mentioned games were all on PlayStation platforms. Why not go to Sony from the get-go? Their Japan Studio could help with the development.

Ueda’s newest game is 2016’s The Last Guardian on the PlayStation 4. Since then, the originally PS2-exclusive Shadow of the Colossus’ PlayStation 4 remake launched, made by Bluepoint Games, with help from Sony’s Japan Studio. Surely, Fumito Ueda’s next game will be next-gen at this point, there’s not much reason to make it for the PlayStation 4 (and maybe the Xbox One) by now.

Still, she likes puzzle and story-oriented games, like Sherlock Holmes: Crimes & Punishments, which is her favourite title. She also played The Sims 3, but after accidentally killing a whole sim family, swore not to play it again. (For our office address, email and phone number check out our IMPRESSUM)
