It seems the technology, which is called RTX on PC, is going to use a different approach in PlayStation 5.
Komachi has once again revealed new details about GPUs (as an insider, it’s expected). He revealed details about four chips, codenamed Sparkman, Arden, Oberon, and Ariel. The first two are rumoured to be used by the Xbox Series X model of the next-gen Xbox, and the Oberon/Ariel duo has been rumoured to be used by the PlayStation 5. „I can confirm @KOMACHI_ENSAKA’s findings there. As far as that source goes, both Sparkman & Arden have RT & VRS (variable-rate shading) mentioned, Oberon & Ariel don’t,” we read on Twitter. So if the PlayStation 5 will indeed use these two chips, then they might create ray tracing with their custom technology, and not with AMD’s help.
There’s also hope regarding 3D audio – a few developers talked about it to GamesRadar. „I think the raw computing power needed to create realistic audio models is largely overlooked. In the past, we have managed to create fairly good representations of acoustic modelling through a lot of trickery and clever techniques. The ability to fully realise automated 3D audio is a big step forward for game audio and will certainly result in much richer experiences,” Samuel Justice (previously an Audio Director/Designer for The Chinese Room, DICE, and Frictional Games), Co-Founder and Supervising Sound Designer of Sweet Justice Sound (a company behind the sound in Fortnite, Half-Life: Alyx, Mortal Kombat 11 among others), said. Even ray tracing could benefit the audio: „It can be used to improve the sense of realism by more accurate adjustments to the audio depending on the environment surrounding the player, in real-time,” Marcus Klang, Lead Sound Designer at Zoink Games (Fe, Ghost Giant), added.
Dutch Let’s Go Digital has once again found that Sony filed a patent for an updated DualShock controller, which is potentially going to be the final DualShock 5. The documentation reveals four additional buttons on the rear of the unit, which is interesting timing, as Sony has recently announced the Back Button Attachment for the DualShock 4. The larger keys could be used to extend the handgrips to fit different hand sizes, and the other buttons could be used for gameplay.
The PlayStation 5 will be available in less than a year, for an unknown price.
