A recent survey has brought up some surprising results.
Gamesindustry wrote about a survey that was carried out by ISFE and Ipsos MORI. In it, they asked 8000 people between the age of 11 and 64 in France, Spain, Germany, Italy, and the United Kingdom. First, let’s see the answers if we include people that own both a PC and a console. The question was: what is their priority regarding the PlayStation 5 and the Xbox Series X? In other words, what do they expect from the two next-gen consoles?
- Graphics – 68%
- The reduction of the loading times – 63%
- Motion controls – 49%
- Backwards compatibility – 48%
- Physical (disc) games – 47%
- Streaming (PlayStation Now, Project xCloud) – 44%
- Non-game apps (such as Netflix) – 41%
- 8K resolution games – 40%
- Portable modes – 38%
- Virtual reality – 37%
We don’t understand the portability. Most likely neither consoles will have a display and even then, we didn’t mention the size of the consoles just yet! The streaming could allow portability. Motion controls in third are surprising, but most of them are alright. We do have to point out that the better graphics are the top priority for the people that got surveyed. Meanwhile, seeing better GAMEPLAY is not on the list. It’s somewhat of a disappointment. Sure, a game could be looking good, but if it’s unplayable, it’s not going to be much of a surprise… Now let’s see the list if we only look at those who own a console.

Backwards compatibility and the disc-based games get more priority, but it’s surprising how 8K resolution, the portability, and VR are still at the bottom of the list. The graphics and the less loading times are the most important for the European players. The latter is understandable. The disc-based games are proven to be important: you can sell your used copy of a game easily to spend that money on a new one.
The PlayStation 5 and the Xbox Series X will launch this Holiday season.
