Cyberpunk 2077: The Next-Gen Version Is In Development!

Cyberpunk 2077CD Projekt RED will make good use of one of the new functions of the Xbox Series X!

„Gamers should never be forced to purchase the same game twice or pay for upgrades. Owners of Cyberpunk 2077 for Xbox One will receive the Xbox Series X upgrade for free when available,” CD Projekt RED wrote on Twitter. It effectively confirms that Cyberpunk 2077 is getting a next-gen iteration. It’s impossible to go back on this from now on if the studio talks about it.

This is about the Xbox Series X’ Smart Delivery function. Let us quote Microsoft on this: „This technology empowers you to buy a game once and know that—whether you are playing it on Xbox One or Xbox Series X—you are getting the right version of that game on whatever Xbox you’re playing on.” So it’s essentially the Xbox Play Anywhere idea (between Xbox One and Windows 10), taken to the next level. It means that you need to do a single purchase if you play on console. You get the Xbox One version in the Fall, you get the Xbox Series X update/version for free when it is done. (It could boost the sales of this version.)

It’s an important decision. CD Projekt RED is the first third-party developer to announce that they will make use of Smart Delivery. And while one developer can’t start a massive change, their reputation could mean that other developers will follow suit. Okay, they say it’s an upgrade, but we can call this a next-gen version. This isn’t just an Xbox One X patch, it’s more than that. However, will Sony do something similar? They seem to be the company that makes us pay twice. After all, they needed years to open up to cross-play, too.

Cyberpunk 2077 will launch on September 17 on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PC, and possibly Google Stadia. The Xbox Series X version/upgrade comes at an unknown date.
