PlatinumGames‘ updated version of the game, The Wonderful 101 (which turned out to be the first of the Platinum 4 projects – we talked about the second and the third one earlier today…) got an exact release date.
The Wonderful 101 was originally a Nintendo Wii U-exclusive, and it came out in 2013. In the game, our goal is to use the isometric view to have a good look on the environment and to save the civilians, who then can join our team of heroes that are capable of transforming into several formations. More heroes result in a better formation that can defeat enemies, solve puzzles, or traverse the environment. In return, the batteries will drain – you can see a bar on the top of the screen that is meant to show it. The original version used the Nintendo Wii U’s GamePad nicely, and it looks like the Nintendo Switch could use the touchscreen as well, but the PlayStation 4 and the PC will get more traditional control methods (as in, a controller). The reason why it’s an interesting game is because after his previous game (which, at the time, was Bayonetta), Kamiya made a different, yet still action-packed, tactical adventure.
In the game, even Hideki Kamiya, the director, showed up as a special character, the Wonder Director. However, he was as good as knocked out by a single hit, but in return, his voice line delivery was amazingly flat (for example, he said beam in Japanese, or he also said Ask your mom, which was one of his meme-like responses on Twitter).
In his message, Kamiya says the following: „I can’t say it was much of a success, from a business standpoint. I’ve also never thought of it as a failure. I didn’t back then, and I don’t today. That’s because, to a game creator, a game is only a failure if it disappoints the gamers who play it. From the start, The Wonderful 101 didn’t quite reach a large enough audience for me to clearly call it either way. […]The Wonderful 101 has gotten this miraculous second chance thanks to all of you who’ve told us you wanted to play it, as well as the passionate PG staff who worked on it with me. We’re delighted to see it return on Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, and Steam. […] We’ve tuned the controls for each new platform and made several adjustments that should make it easier to grasp and play. On top of that, we’ve improved the image quality and frame rate to suit modern hardware. On the whole, I’d say The Wonderful 101: Remastered is the definitive edition of the game!”
It was indeed an entertaining game, but the platform’s failure did not help. (Even Kamiya said it above.) Thus, PlatinumGames decided to self-publish the game (thanks to Nintendo), and we now know that it will be available in North America on PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch, and PC (Steam) from May 19. (Europe will get it on May 22, Japan will get it on June 11, but the Steam launch will likely be a worldwide one.) The physical distribution is handled by Nighthawk Interactive. The price is 40 dollars/45 euros. The game will have English and Japanese dubbing, as well as English, Japanese, French, Italian, German, and Spanish dubbing.
