The COVID-19 doesn’t seem to slow down yet, causing more events to be cancelled this year.
The first one we mention today is Anime Expo (AX) 2020, which is organised by The Society for the Promotion of Japanese Animation. They announced that the event, which would have been held in the Los Angeles Convention Center (the E3’s location!) between July 2 and July 5 will not happen this year. Instead, they announced a return in 2021, with the location remaining the same.
Although the convention is indeed mostly about anime, some video game companies, such as Aksys Games, Bandai Namco, and Spike Chunsoft, announce games or game localisations at this event. Aksys Games would have announced Mikage’s original project at this event. It is in development for PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch, and PC.
„Badge holders will have the option to receive a full refund or to have their badges rolled over to AX 2021. As this is a big undertaking, please give us time to get the process solidified and stay tuned for more information in the coming days. Exhibitors and artists can expect to receive information via email sometime next week. Hotel room reservations booked through ConferenceDirect in the AX official hotel block will be automatically cancelled. If you booked a room outside the AX hotel block, please contact your hotel directly,” Ray Chang, the CEO of the organisers, wrote in his message.
The other event that got shafted this year is the San Diego Comic-Con. For the first time in fifty years, the event, which would have been also held in July, is cancelled. The announcement can be read on the website. The organisers were hoping for the coronavirus situation to improve by the summer, but the governor of California recommended mass gatherings to not happen this summer, which led to the cancellation. As with AX, badge holders can either request a refund or move their payment over to next year; in 2021, the event is planned to be held between July 22 and July 25.
There’s also a third event, but we’ll talk about that more in detail.
