Sony‘s console received a new system software update, but perhaps it wasn’t tested properly before it got published.
The 471 MB firmware update could probably get expectations of it adding more interesting functions to the PlayStation 4, which nears 6.5 years in its age, but no: all we get in the patch note is that „this software update improves system performance.” Still, Sony managed to botch something, as many players found themselves with issues after installing the new firmware.
Reddit’s PlayStation 4 subreddit has many users complain (and for a good reason) after they installed the new system software update. One of the biggest issues is that the PlayStation 4 effectively gets rendered useless, as the new firmware is followed by the console not booting at all. A few users found themselves in an infinite loop: their PS4 launches, only to shut down, rinse and repeat. Meanwhile, they have no way to use inputs – their controller doesn’t respond either. Others can turn their PlayStation 4 on, but the console transmits no signals. In other words, the console seems to function, but the display is black. That’s also a not-that-useful scenario.
There are problems with the Blu-ray drive, too. A few users found themselves with the SU-42118-6 error, seen elsewhere before. In case you don’t have a PS4: this error doesn’t allow you to install games. It affects those who prefer getting physical copies of games instead of getting them via the PlayStation 4 – the latter group is not impacted by the faulty optical drive. The new firmware seems to do something with the Blu-ray drive: after installing the 7.50 firmware, the drive doesn’t read discs, or it doesn’t eject them either…
And since it’s not easy to fix the console nowadays, all we can do is eject the disc before installing, and then pray the console functions after 7.50 is installed. If it doesn’t, then turn the console on in safe mode by holding the power button for ten seconds, and install the new firmware there.
…but why did Sony release this firmware in such a state?
