PlayStation temporarily removes all its advertising from Facebook and Instagram

The company joins the #StopHateForProfit campaign in protest to these platforms.

Facebook is a company that has been in the limelight for several years for its tendency to unleash hateful content on its platforms rather than stop it. This has caused, in recent weeks, hundreds of companies have withdrawn their advertising from Facebook and Instagram as a boycott of these networks, including large ones such as Coca-Cola, Microsoft or Starbucks. Now, they are joined by another name: PlayStation.

Sony‘s gaming division has released a statement (via Games Industry ) in which they show their full solidarity with the recent #StopHateForProfit movement, and announce the withdrawal of all their advertising on these platforms during July: “In support To the #StopHateForProfit campaign, we have suspended our Facebook and Instagram activity worldwide, including advertising and unpaid content, until the end of July. ”

“We defend working (and playing) all together for good.” Emerged in the wake of the George Floyd case, with Facebook’s refusal to remove posts on the topics of hate, discrimination and racism because they generate interactions, the #StopHateForProfit movement urges companies to withdraw their Facebook campaigns. All this to harm their income and force Mark Zuckerberg’s company to take responsibility for their platforms.

The advertising business accounted for 98% of the $ 70 billion in revenue that Facebook generated last year (via NPR), and with the more than 400 companies that have joined the cause, it appears that the figure will drop dramatically. considerable this year. For his part, Zuckerberg has told his employees that he believes advertisers will return to the platform soon. In any case, if you have missed some of the news from Sony in these weeks, here you have all the announcements of the PlayStation 5 event, as well as the official presentation of its new console.
