Predictions claim that the PlayStation 5 will not be able to sell as much as the PlayStation 2 did.
„The life cycle for household game consoles may be shortened to five years from 6-7 years, and [the] PlayStation 5 shipments may challenge 120-170 million units when its 5-year cycle expires. [This is] compared to 110 million units registered to date for [the] PlayStation 4 launched in November 2013, the sources said, adding that Sony has recently boosted its PS5 shipment estimate for 2020 to near 10 million units,” reads Digitimes‘ report, which draws on sources from the PlayStation 5’s backend supply in Taiwan.
This would mean that the PlayStation 5 would sell twice as much as the Xbox Series X (60 million) according to Digitimes. Also, they have a point: we have previously heard that Sony has increased the initial PlayStation 5 shipments from 5-6 million to 10 (and we wrote about it, too). The site also mentions that AMD’s Ryzen Zen 2-based CPUs are already being delivered to Sony, and the peripheral chipsets are „expected to peak later in the third quarter to support the first wave of terminal sales in the fourth quarter.” (Third quarter: July-September, fourth is October-December, respectively.)
A Chinese forum has three images of the PlayStation 5’s alleged white outer plates that seem to be replaceable, and Sony will likely sell them separately, too. Let’s hope that these are not photoshopped images or something printed with 3D printers.
It looks like the covers are not held on with screws but some type of pegs or hooks, meaning they could be easy to remove, perhaps because Sony was considering cooling while designing the PlayStation 5… and we might even help the console cool down by removing them. (And if the images are not fake, then the PlayStation 5 could be 14-15 inches tall/long.)
During the last few days of March, according to Ned Segal, Twitter’s chief financial officer in the company Q2 fiscal report, Sony has been affected by the coronavirus, and yet, it managed to get over a million mentions with the PlayStation 5, which was nearly four times more than Twitter’s internal benchmark for the engagement rate (retweets, comments or likes). We don’t know exact figures, but Twitter tracks average engagement rates for various industries.
„Brands have found innovative ways to join in on the conversation and connect with their customers despite the pandemic. For example, PlayStation leveraged an 89% global increase in video game conversation on Twitter in late Q1 to build interest and awareness for the PlayStation 5. Their successful takeover campaign with a Branded Emoji, a Promoted Trend Spotlight, and First View, resulted in PlayStation being the top global trend with over 1 million mentions over two days and a 4 times higher engagement rate than the benchmark. We continue to amplify conversations around live events,” Segal said.
The PlayStation 5 (in both the PlayStation 5 Standard Edition and the Blu-ray-less PlayStation 5 Digital Edition versions) will launch this Holiday season. The price and exact release date have yet to be announced.
