DFC Intelligence, a video game industry research firm, believes that Sony‘s next-gen console will continue the tradition of the PlayStation 4 (namely outselling the Microsoft competitor by a big margin).
DFC Intelligence’s new forecast says the following: „The PlayStation 5 [might be] outselling the Xbox Series X by a margin of 2-to-1. The PlayStation 5 looks likely to be Sony’s third 100 million unit selling console game system [after the PS2 and the PlayStation 4]. Microsoft is trying its best with Xbox Series X, but the past few months have revealed they are just too far behind Sony. Consumer brand preference is strongly towards PlayStation. As a piece of hardware, there is nothing Xbox Series X is doing to change that perception.
Sony is also a global powerhouse in video games. Microsoft is only strong in English speaking markets. The Xbox has no presence in Japan and is weak in most of Europe. Sony’s strength in global consumer electronics distribution has been too much for Microsoft to overcome, even after 20 years of concerted effort,” the firm says.
However, they add that Microsoft has a different plan than Sony. They are going for long-term goals, as the video game audience thinks outside consoles, too. The Game Pass subscription service might bring a lot of success to them on PC and mobile platforms. Meanwhile, they believe Sony is focused on short-term sales, meaning Microsoft might be competing with Nintendo in the long run.
„With every generation, it always feels like we master the generation, right, then it’s like ‘oh, there’s a new one coming up,’ and you’re like ‘but I just finally got this one. But I think this is going to be a little bit different. It feels like we’ve got a really good foundation of understanding, so transitioning between generations is going to be a little bit less of a massive leap of faith,” Cory Barlog, the director of the 2018 PlayStation 4-exclusive God of War, said during the newest Animal Talking podcast (although it uses Animal Crossing for the video feed). He has a point: the CPU architecture will remain x86-64, and the GPU won’t need much of re-learning.
„There’s more [than making Spider-Man PlayStation-exclusive in Marvel’s Avengers]. They’re holding onto some things that I’m like really surprised they’re holding onto and I wouldn’t be shocked if they showed them soon. There are things you will be shocked to find out that Sony is moneyhatting, that they are like locking up for timed exclusivity of like “wow, that is a game you are choosing?” Not because it’s bad, because it’s huge. So I am interested to see where this conversation is going to be in a couple of months because there are games that are widely accepted as multiplatform that Sony is locking up for a little while. So I would not be shocked if they did something insane like that,” Imran Khan, the co-hose of Kinda Funny Games Daily, said in the newest instalment.
We wonder what third-party exclusive deals did Sony manage to pull in.
