A Developer Leaks About The PlayStation 5’s User Interface

After Microsoft revealed its new, unified user interface that will come this Holiday season (we wrote about it in the news earlier today), now we hear from the other side.

Allegedly, a Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War (game reveal on August 26…) artist wrote a Reddit post, which got deleted, but – as always – it happened too late. He said he knows about the information below because Sony approached Activision Blizzard to work on a pre-order bonus PlayStation 5 theme for the new Call of Duty.

The UI is „very similar to the PlayStation 4 user interface in a lot of ways,” which goes against the previous rumours of „100% redesigned.” The games and apps are now located at the bottom of the screen, peaking out halfway until they are selected. Hovering over a game changes the centre of the screen to a developer-selected image, and if you select it, it „zooms into the image like you’re jumping into a portal to your game.” The games will reveal details about which friends play the same game, as well as special events. These game panels can be animated, and they can be updated so the developers can, for example, bring the attention to double XP event weekends in the new Call of Duty. The news tab can be accessed by pushing down on a game panel.

The top row of the options have „PlayStation Plus, PlayStation Now, Alerts (replacing Notifications), Friends, Party, Forum, Profile, ???, ??? (these two intentionally not mentioned), Settings, and Power Off.” He says that the PlayStation 5 themes will have designed icons and art. The leaker added that he saw five different designs of the UI before the above details were the „finalized” one, which he expects was a misdirect to prevent leaks. (Good job on that, though.)

Sony is offering „4D themes” that change the background, music, and UI icons/art. These themes can also play sound through the DualSense, make it rumble at specific times, and change even the colour of the lights. The background art of the theme will show when there’s no other game or app selected, similar to the PlayStation 4. Sony says that themes being able to overlap UI elements (some PS4 themes can pull it off), but the leaker’s team decided not to do that.

The leaker says that Activision Blizzard and PlayStation are working „VERY closely” together, meaning „Sony has had a bit more influence” on Call of Duty Black Ops Cold War. „Why am I leaking? Activision [Blizzard] are assholes who leave friends without a job and homeless while the boss [Bobby Kotick] gets a couple extra million to his bank account. It’s dehumanizing and I’m sick of it. I hope this helps to f*ck over Activision in some way. We just want to make a game that’s fun and not filled with all the Black Ops branding. It is quite late and I’m just a drunk tired dude who is tired of corporate bullsh*t,” he wrote.

Nothing is official of this, though.
