The paid Chimera Pack includes a questionable emblem that seems to hugely resemble a neo-Nazi symbol…
Call of Duty: Warzone has the Chimera Pack for roughly eleven dollars. One of its logos seems to be taken from the Azov Battalion, which happens to be a far-right nationalist group that was formed out of a regiment of the Ukrainian national guard in 2014, during the early days of the Russo-Ukrainian war. The logo has been in the game nearly for a year, but it was mentioned on Reddit, quickly getting traction. If you don’t see any resemblance, here are the two logos side-by-side below.
Both of the logos were inspired by the Wolfsangel, which is a centuries-old Germanic symbol. It was then taken by Adolf Hitler’s party during the second world war (2nd SS Panzer Division), and even neo-Nazi groups, such as the Aryan Nations, like to use it. The similarities are there, and the historic references don’t lie. We also need to look at the in-game context, though.
In Call of Duty: Warzone, Chimera is a fictional PMC, which was started by a CoD: Modern Warfare character called Nikolai. He’s a Russian weapons trader who works with the campaign’s main characters to bring down a terrorist organization. Chimera isn’t associated with any nation, but one of its members, Yegor, is Ukrainian. He’s one of the three operators that get a unique outfit when buying the pack, but his uniform omits the symbol. The logo is a colour flip of the Azov Battalion’s, and Chimera is an anti-hero group. Farah Karim, the protagonist of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, is part of it.
In 2017, Bungie removed a gauntlet from Destiny 2, because it resembled an alt-right flag. They explained that the similarity was nothing more than an accident. Is the situation the same here, too? We’re not sure. Sure, Call of Duty: Warzone rotates the available packs for purchase in the store, and the devs manually rotate them, but we suspect that Activision Blizzard has to do something about the logo in question.
