Guardians of the Galaxy creators talk about the character design process

The creative team behind Guardians of the Galaxy has just released a new video showing a critical aspect of the game, the design of the main characters. The game, based on Marvel comics, is due to arrive in October.

Eidos Montreal and Square Enix have teamed up to bring us a new adventure game, Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy, based on the comic book characters that have been a big hit in the movies.

In the video below, Bruno Gauthier-Leblanc, Art Director at Eidos-Montréal, explains how the team took great care in creating the characters to find a balance between the Marvel universe and the game’s story. “To create the new look for this dysfunctional but fun family, we drew inspiration from the Marvel comics and their backstories, so each Guardian has a particular design that influences the gameplay itself,” he says.

He also talks about the look of Star-Lord, whose style brings out his rocker side, inspired by the 90s. Drax, meanwhile, shows off his combat experience, with every victory leaving a mark on his body. Bruno says that his design also relates to his home planet Katath, where the architecture also reflects the circular nature of Drax’s battle tributes. He also says that in Gamora‘s case, they went with a robust design to show that she is the most muscular woman in the galaxy.

And in the game, she will have to make decisions and develop good relationships with them. For example, Rocket wears a Groot bead on his goatee to symbolise their friendship. These interconnected structures also allow them to fight in pairs. Guardians of the Galaxy is scheduled to debut on 26 October.
