The studio behind Friday the 13th is reportedly working on a new Ghostbusters game, which might be a PlayStation-exclusive due to the license.
The news comes from a rather unusual place, however: PCGamesN reported on an interview Raphael Saadiq gave on the Questlove Supreme podcast. He’s a singer, composer, and producer, so he doesn’t have much to do with the games industry… but he was the one who revealed in half a sentence, and presumably unwittingly, that IllFonic is quietly working on something.
The member of Tony! Toni! Tone! (who is also producing for artists such as Snoop Dogg or Bee Gees) was the co-founder of IllFonic; his partner in crime was Charles Brungardt. Saadiq mentions that the studio is “working on Ghostbusters right now” at one hour and twenty seconds into the podcast. And seeing how he is related to IllFonic, it might be worth believing what the producer said…
Ghostbusters: Afterlife will debut in theatres on November 19 (Wikipedia mentions November 11, but that’s either a premiere date or it’s made up), and it will be a sequel to the original films, following the storyline of the first 1984 and the second 1988 instalment. (Unofficially, there was already the third instalment… because the 2009 Ghostbusters game was that with the original cast.)
Timing a game to the film would be a no-brainer, and since IllFonic is at home in multiplayer games (and licensed projects at that, see Friday the 13th, or Predator: Hunting Grounds), it would make sense to ask them to do it. There is only one drawback: no announcement has been made so far, and the movie premiere is a good month and a half away, so it should be announced soon that, yes, a game is coming.
The joke is that the studio has another co-operative shooter, Arcadegeddon, currently in Early Access status on the Epic Games Store. Are they holding more than one marshmallow to the fire? The answer is most likely yes.
