Every third to fourth AAA game in the games industry now shows this, and Battlefield 2042 is no exception: it doesn’t reach players in the best condition on launch day, which is when the critical voices start coming in, and the developer and publisher try to fix it (which may be too late, seeing the effectiveness of the first impression).
Battlefield 2042 can also be found on Steam, as Electronic Arts has abandoned the idea that its products should only be available on Origin. It meant that players could express their displeasure with their ratings, and the new Battlefield has met the same fate. Hitboxes are not in the best place; the bullet deviation is severe, performance on PC is terrible (maybe Denuvo should be abandoned), the weapon customisation menus are misleading, and there is no traditional scoreboard. The near-future warfare is not in the best condition at the moment.
Battlefield 2042 currently has 36211 ratings on Steam. Of those, only 26% are positive. So that’s over 26,000 negative reviews on Gabe Newell’s digital store, with a pretty shameful ranking on Steam250 for the worst-rated games on Steam. At the moment, it’s in 9th place. Still, it doesn’t look like it’s going to catch up with Konami’s massive flop that is eFootball 2022, but who knows, maybe DICE can claim second place from Flatout 3: Chaos & Destruction (which is in second place and is jokingly labelled as a psychological horror…?).
And the situation won’t be helped much by Microsoft, who quietly (with a few rumours, though) launched the multiplayer beta for Halo Infinite with 343 Industries a week ago, almost a month before the game’s launch in stores. And since it’s a free-to-play element in Master Chief’s game, Electronic Arts must be scratching its head because the green armoured Spartan will be a tough match.
So Battlefield 2042 will now have a steep uphill climb to recover its reputation. The question is whether this will happen…
