The Father of Dark Souls Revealed That He Doesn’t Like to Play With His Own Games, and Also Explained Why

Dark Souls creator Hidetaka Miyazaki has revealed that he doesn’t even enjoy his own games, including the remake of Demon’s Souls.

Miyazaki Hidetaka, the father of the Souls-like genre, was interviewed in a recent issue of Edge, revealing that the Japanese developer doesn’t like to play his own games. Well, not for the reason you might first think, which is that Dark Souls, Bloodborne and other FromSoftware games are incredibly difficult. The reason why Miyazaki Hidetaka shies away from his own games is more prosaic: the director gets very easily emotional while whining about games, and after a while, it gets to him.

Speaking about Edge, the remake of Demon’s Souls being developed by Bluepoint Games for PlayStation 5, Miyazaki said that although he loves developing video games, he can’t enjoy the fruits of his labour:

“It [playing FromSoftware’s games] has brought out a lot of old emotions in me, and a lot of old memories come to the surface that becomes burdensome for me after a while, so the game doesn’t feel like a game anymore. So I haven’t played Demon Soul’s Remake. However, it’s so nice to see this fresh look, backed up with these brand new graphics. It was fun to see how [Bluepoint Games] incorporated visual and mechanical gameplay elements that we didn’t have the opportunity to do at the time [presumably due to lack of technology – ed],” the director said.

Miyazaki Hidetaka and FromSoftware’s games are genre-busters: think of the great Dark Souls or the extremely difficult but beautiful Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice. The latter won the 2019 Game of the Year award, while Kojima’s Hideo Death Stranding picked up the most nominations.

The Japanese developer’s upcoming game Elden Ring is due for release on 25 February. The George R.R. Martin-themed game draws inspiration from works such as Michael Moorcock’s The Eternal Champion, the tabletop role-playing game RuneQuest and, of course, The Lord of the Rings. In addition, Elden Ring is an innovation not only for FromSoftware but also for Souls-like and Soulsborne games in general, as it offers a discoverable open world to roam and ride against the most fierce enemies.
