It hasn’t even been announced that the Twisted Metal franchise will return as a video game. Still, there are rumours that another studio closer to Sony has taken over development… from scratch.
Recently, there were rumours about Twisted Metal (one of the first essential franchises of the PS1, but after the PS3, the car fighting series, whose leading creator was a certain David Jaffe, unfortunately, didn’t get a new instalment… Jaffe was later the creator of God of War; he now no longer works for Sony), that Lucid Games are developing it, the studio behind Destruction AllStars, which is funny because its style closely resembles Twisted Metal, with only a couple of differences…
VGC reports that this plan may have changed. It does not mean that the game’s development is over, but that another studio may simply be behind it. According to the site, Liverpool-based Lucid Games has been replaced by another first-party, or in-house, European Sony team to bring Sweet Tooth back. The reasoning is unclear, but a source at VGC suggests that Destruction AllStars’ lukewarm reception may have played a part.
If we include UK-based studios in the European term, these are the possible teams behind the return of Twisted Metal: Guerrilla Games, Housemarque, Media Molecule, FireSprite, Nixxes Software. Then we could be wrong and say Media Molecule are doing something, but we can’t imagine them working on Twisted Metal. Maybe with their characteristic creative twist, it could be an exciting idea.
It’s not official yet, of course. Still, Sony Pictures has announced that Anthony Mackie (an actor from the MCU, a film universe set in the Marvel Cinematic Universe) will star in the Twisted Metal TV series. If Sony were to release the series and the movie close together, there wouldn’t be much time for development. There is no word yet on when the series will launch, but 2023 seems like a possible date…
