This joint development between Telltale and Deck Nine Games will be canon and tell the story of the origins of Drummer
During The Game Awards 2021 gala in December, the Telltale Games team surprised us with the presentation of The Expanse: A Telltale Series, a development in collaboration with Deck Nine, authors of Life is Strange: True Colors. Now, through an interview, the CEO of Telltale Games shares several details of the project and how this sci-fi universe adventure came about.
“We wanted a character that they hadn’t done a backstory for because we wanted to tell something that could become canon,” Jamie Ottilie tells Game Informer. “She’s unique as a Belter [the inhabitants of the outer solar belt and system in James S. A. Corey’s work],” he says, explaining the character’s background and motivations. “We wanted to tell how she became that person. Her story isn’t told in the novels, and there were no plans to do so in the TV series. Drummer as such doesn’t exist in the books […], and we really like that because it gives us a lot of room to develop an interesting story around him.”
How does it all come together in the adventure? Ottilie promises a journey beyond the asteroid belt, where players will work with a mixed planetarian team [the inhabitants of Earth, the Moon and Mars] and highly personalised Beltonians. “And, of course, they will have to make life-and-death decisions that will affect the team.”
The Telltale Games CEO also explains the reasons for choosing Deck Nine Games for The Expanse: A Telltale Series. Initially, the Westminster studio was considered to take on The Wolf Among Us 2. However, Ottilie adds, they soon realised that Deck Nine would do better with an IP with fewer constraints and predetermined expectations than a sequel.
The chat with Game Informer sheds new details on the development of The Wolf Among Us 2, delving into the story and protagonists, and clarifying once again how this time there will be no delays between the releases of the different chapters of the story, which will have a two-week release window set in advance.
