Rumour has it that there will only be three more Star Wars games from Electronic Arts, and then Andrew Wilson’s company will move on to other things…
Let’s start with the official details: Electronic Arts and LucasFilm Games have announced on the publisher’s website that they have tasked Respawn Entertainment to the Star Wars franchise, with no less than three games to be released in this IP. So far, we’ve only suspected one, and it’s in the trio, but it sounds like a significant surprise.
The first game is the Star Wars Jedi sequel. That is to say: the second instalment of Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order (which was a single-player, DLC-free title that sold so well it took Electronic Arts by surprise) is in the works. It will be directed by Stig Asmussen and will remain an action-adventure in its genre. Then, there will also be a first-person shooter. This project will be led by Peter Hirschmann, a Respawn director (not a bad choice: he produced Medal of Honor for PS1 in 1999).
The third announcement comes as a significant surprise. A strategy game in the Star Wars universe? But Respawn is not developing this one alone, as it has a partner: the newly created Bit Reactor, featured in the news before. Greg Foertsch leads this team, and his team will be in charge of development, while Respawn will handle production. (Given Foertsch’s desire to bring the golden age of turn-based strategy games, it could be a significant motivation.) No target platforms or release dates have been announced.
And now the rumour, courtesy of VentureBeat. According to the site, once these three Star Wars games are done, Electronic Arts will hang up the helmet, as LucasFilm Games, which was revived last year, had its first move to take away exclusivity from EA (which is why, for example, Ubisoft/Massive Entertainment is doing an SW project instead of The Division 3…). It means two things: Star Wars Jedi and even Star Wars: Battlefront won’t get the third instalment. So DICE will have to deal with Battlefield (and the boss of that is… what a small world, Vince Zampella from Respawn).
So the Disney-Electronic Arts deal will soon bring its final products.
