Ubisoft Believes Gamers Just “Don’t Understand” NFTs

In December, the company introduced the Ubisoft Quartz initiative

While NFTs had been floating around the Internet for some time, they certainly rocked the gaming world as soon as Ubisoft announced its Ubisoft Quartz initiative. The digital asset-focused proposal was not supported by the gaming community, which was reflected in a barrage of dislikes on the YouTube video and the subsequent hiding of the presentation. However, Ubisoft is clear that it will go ahead with the idea.

It has reiterated this once again in an interview with Finder, featuring Nicolas Pouard, in charge of Quartz and its Digits, and Didier Genevois, the Technical Director of Blockchain at Ubisoft. According to their statements, they see the project as a big step for the world of video games and are convinced that, although the initial response from gamers has been negative, they will change their minds over time.

“I think gamers don’t understand what a digital aftermarket can give them,” explains Pouard. “For now, because of the current situation and the context of NFTs, players really believe that, first, it’s destroying the planet, and second, it’s just a tool for speculation. But what we see [at Ubisoft] is the endgame. The endgame is about giving players the opportunity to resell their items once they’re done with them or have finished the game”.

Ubisoft is also aware that the announcement would bring a wave of criticism, as they see this as a natural part of their move: “Also, this is part of a paradigm shift in video games. Moving from one economic system to another is not easy to handle. There are a lot of habits you need to go against and an ingrained mentality you need to change. It takes time. We know that.”

It is no surprise that Ubisoft is still fighting for its Ubisoft Quartz, as it has already mentioned on multiple occasions that it is an idea it will not abandon. However, the project has also received negative feedback from developers and big companies, with Xbox ruling out NFTs because of their apparent lack of entertainment, and Josef Fares, director of It Takes Two, saying he’d rather get shot in the knee than put NFTs in his games.
