Sony’s PlayStation 2 had long reigned as the best-selling video game console of all time, but it is very rare for a gaming console to manage to stay strong in the lead after a significant period of time from release. The data is from the latest financial results report shared by the Japanese company.

The figure achieved and the time elapsed since the Switch’s launch in 2017 put the hybrid selling faster than PS4 and Wii, other successful consoles if we look at that same margin. The Wii has 101.63 million units sold, while the PS1 has 102.49 million.

Territorially, it has sold over 24 million consoles in Japan. In America, it has sold 40 million more, in Europe almost 27 million, and the sales figures for the rest of the world are 12 million.

The Japanese figures are not surprising. Switch sold five times as other consoles in Japan in 2021. In the US, it was the best-selling console of 2021 and the best-selling console of Christmas. In other markets, such as the US, we also see a market dominance that continues to expand over the years.

The Nintendo Switch has surpassed sell in of 100 million units, reaching 103.54m as of December 31, 2021.
