MOVIE NEWS – Birds have been chirping for a while now that Dakota Johnson might appear in Sony’s Spider-Man spin-off Madame Web, and now she’s further boosted the mood with an Instagram post…
After a few days of speculation, Dakota Johnson has sneakily confirmed rumours that she will play Madame Web in the new Spider-Man spin-off. The new movie in the Spider-Man universe was initially announced back in 2019, but since then, it’s been pretty much radio silence until last month. It was then suggested that Sony was in talks with Johnson for the role, which will be part of the expanding Spider-Man universe.
Madame Web’s character, also known as Cassandra Webb, first appeared in The Amazing Spider-Man #210 in the 1980s as Spider-Man’s ally. While Peter Parkers retains most of his human characteristics, Madame Web is a mutant with a range of supernatural abilities – astral projection, telepathy and clairvoyance – born blind and paralysed, relying on a spider web-shaped life support machine.
Dakota Johnson shared a picture of a spider web on her Instagram story…
Although Johnson did not directly comment on the rumours, shortly after the story of her alleged negotiations with Sony came to light, she made a post on her Instagram story sharing a simple spider web picture. The post was apparently strategically made to tie in with the Spider-Man spin-off news, and such a cryptic post is, if nothing else, a good confirmation of the fact that negotiations are taking place.
Interestingly, Dakota Johnson is considered by many to be young enough to play the character, as Madame Web has been portrayed mainly as an older woman. If casting has indeed taken place, there could be several reasons why a younger version of Cassandra Webb was chosen. The most obvious idea would be that the on-screen iteration would form an origin story for the character, but beyond that, it’s also possible that the film will simply do what the MCU did with Aunt May. Previous versions of May, including in Sony’s previous Spider-Man films, have all been much older than Marisa Tomei’s character in the Tom Holland trilogy, and this could be just another character coming of age.
There still seem to be a lot of unanswered questions about the Madame Web movie, but for now, it looks like Johnson is certainly making sure the rumour mill keeps churning.
