Uncharted Director Says “The Audience Will Decide” If There Will Be A Sequel

MOVIE NEWS – Ruben Fleischer is “excited” to make a sequel to Uncharted but says fans will decide the future of the potential franchise.

It’s been decided: if a sequel to Uncharted does eventually go ahead, director Ruben Fleischer will be the man on the watch. The movie based on the popular video game series is already in cinemas, but whether it will eventually launch a new Lifetime series like the game did is yet to be seen.

In a new interview with Collider, Fleischer talked about the possible future of Uncharted. There’s nothing official in the works about a sequel at the moment, but Fleischer admitted that he thought a lot about different story ideas while working on the first film. He also made it clear that he would be happy to return to the director’s chair if Uncharted 2 gets the green light from Sony, but suggests that this will ultimately depend on how well fans receive the film and whether there is a demand for another movie.

“I’d be thrilled at the opportunity to make a sequel!”

“[…] working on this film for two years… I can’t help but imagine different adventures these guys might find themselves on and I’d be thrilled to figure out a way to bring those to life. But ultimately the audience will decide if that’s something they’re excited to see.”

The fact that the Uncharted series has several acclaimed video games means there’s plenty of source material to draw from when making potential sequels. We’ll have to see how well Uncharted ultimately performs overall, but it looks like it could be quite a blockbuster in terms of international and US release. Negative reviews aren’t helping the film, however, but while it’s sporting a dismal 39% score on Rotten Tomatoes, it’s been much better received by moviegoers, with a “fresh” audience score of 90%.

Ruben Fleischer said that one of their goals with Uncharted is to bring back these types of globe-trotting adventure films. Even without the strongest critical reception, there may be a future here for Uncharted sequels and similar theatrical releases if this film does well enough at the box office.

“Well, my point being is that it’s a genre that they just don’t make that much anymore,” the director told Uproxx. “So, I approach this more as somebody who got to make a treasure-hunting, globe-trotting adventure, more than a video game adaptation. And while it was based on a game that, lucky for us, it was incredible source material with a great sense of humor and some of the best action set pieces in all of video games. But, at the end of the day, I knew I had to make a movie that would be entertaining for people, whether or not they’ve heard of the game or anybody else. […] I mean, National Treasure was, I think, the last one.”

Uncharted is in cinemas now.
