Do Resident Evil’s Current-Gen Patches Prefer Resolution Or Frame Rate? [VIDEO]

Resident Evil 2 Remake, Resident Evil 3 Remake, and Resident Evil 7: Biohazard received PlayStation 5/Xbox Series updates this week, but we haven’t discussed them in-depth yet.

Earlier this week, we wrote about the patches being released, but the other day, we also mentioned that the update was initially mandatory for PC players. However, due to the outcry (DirectX 12-only support, meaning games only running on Windows 10/11, and increased system requirements), the Japanese publisher allowed us to revert the three affected games to an earlier version. Still, we also mentioned that Resident Evil 7: Biohazard in the PlayStation Plus Collection can’t be upgraded to the PlayStation 5 version. You must buy the game separately.

A YouTube channel called ElAnalistaDeBits compared the console versions. If you leave ray tracing turned on, the Xbox Series X and the PlayStation 5 run at dynamic 4K resolution. Microsoft’s console is mostly native 4K (2160p), but Sony’s machine runs at a slightly lower resolution (2016p). The Xbox Series S has a dynamic 1440p, while the native resolution is around 1152p.

However, using ray tracing (RT) requires a sacrifice for high resolution: in other words, the frame rate is not perfect. The PlayStation 5 and the Xbox Series X often drop below 60 FPS, and there are even examples where the frame rate dips into the forties. The Xbox Series S falls even lower than that so that you can get ~30-40 FPS on this platform. The PlayStation 5 (which struggles more during the scenes with heavier RT usage) and the Xbox Series X aren’t entirely stable in Performance mode, which is tuned for 120 FPS, with values between 80-90 FPS often seen. Turning off RT isn’t a bad idea, though: then, you get a stable sixty frames per second on all three consoles.

So the patch is not perfect on consoles either…
