PlayStation announced the acquisition back in March, and there are high hopes for Haven, even though the studio doesn’t have any games on the market yet.
PlayStation is constantly expanding its studio portfolio, with one of the latest surprises being the acquisition of Haven, the development team founded by Jade Raymond in 2021. While the company has yet to release a game, Sony claims to be impressed with the studio’s upcoming title. Not many details about the project are now known beyond the fact that it will be a multiplayer experience, but the Japanese company is betting on the decision.
“We really believe [cloud] is going to be a game changer in terms of how games are made” – Jade Raymond
Just a few months after announcing the purchase, the Japanese company took to Twitter to inform us that Haven is now part of the PlayStation Studios family. This fact is complemented by some details about the developer’s modus operandi, thanks to an interview with GamesIndustry’s Jade Raymond.
Haven’s system puts a lot of emphasis on the potential of the cloud, which they see as vital to the evolution of video games as a medium: “We had a cloud team initially that was about six people working on new ways to work. Now, we’ve just welcomed another 21 engineers to focus on long-term cloud innovation, because we really believe it’s going to be a game changer in terms of how games are made.”
Raymond explains that working in the cloud allows for greater organisational opportunities, with the added bonus of adapting to the needs of employees to work from home or the office. In short, Raymond says, it becomes a “hybrid” system.
What do we know about the first Haven game?
As mentioned at the beginning of this article, Haven is working on a multiplayer title. No specific details have been revealed, but Raymond has so far sold it as an unannounced new IP that he says will invite us to fully immerse ourselves in it: “We want to create worlds where players can escape, have fun, express themselves and find a sense of community. We want to invest our passion in a project. We want to give people an amazing experience.”
“Because we believe that games can make people happy, and Sony believes that.”
GamesIndustry’s interview didn’t touch on Haven’s first game, so we continue to wait for the developers to reveal more information about the project. What we do know is that PlayStation is not done with acquisitions; the company wants to spend more on its studios and is planning a multiplatform push.
