Evolve’s P2P Servers Are Back!

The original release of Evolve (Legacy) and Evolve Stage 2 have attracted more players, but this story has a twist.

In 2015, 2K (=Take-Two) released an asymmetric multiplayer game where a monster had to be killed by four players before it became too powerful for the hunters to take on. The game’s servers were P2P, or peer-to-peer, by default and came with some extra DLC alongside the then-ridiculously expensive cosmetic microtransactions. Still, the servers were shut down in early 2018, leaving only the peer-to-peer connections alive with missing features. The publisher is now focusing on Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands, for example.

Despite it, the servers have suddenly been resurrected for entirely unfathomable reasons because there is no reason for Take-Two to do it, and now, we can only play the game through Evolve Stage 2, and only with peer-to-peer connections, because that is how the servers were set up. The weird thing is that if you don’t have Evolve Stage 2, you can still play with everyone. If you already have the game on Steam, that’s fine; you can launch it from Valve’s digital platform anytime.

For those playing on PlayStation 4 or Xbox One, the best they could do is try a physical copy, and if you don’t have the Blu-ray disc, there’s little point in looking on the PlayStation Store or Microsoft Store. And on PC, as a NEW player (Reddit points out), you can only get code from grey sources. According to Steam Stats, the 18 players seen on July 20 have been joined by quite a few, with 136 players by July 22.

It should be pointed out here that although matchmaking is currently working (which could take forever if you’re unlucky, and it’s best to be prepared for that), the maximum you can play on console is a disc copy (and who knows how easy that is). On PC you can’t just tap Steam for a code because the game has been out of stock for a long time. Still, the question remains unanswered: what exactly is Take-Two doing here…?
