NetherRealm Studios: Ed Boon Is Captain Obvious!

There’s a 50/50 chance we can guess what NetherRealm’s next game will be.

The Warner-owned studio has been working exclusively on two IPs for the last decade. One is their original creation, as Mortal Kombat was mostly their brainchild (one of the game’s creators, Ed Boon, still works at the studio as the chief creative officer), and the other IP mostly lifted characters from DC comics, resulting in the two Injustice games. So the studio works exclusively on fighting games, but that’s okay (e.g., Polyphony Digital, famous for Gran Turismo, mostly made only racing games, except for the PS1-exclusive and very neglected Omega Boost, a rail shooter).

Boon received a question asking if he could give us hints as to what NetherRealm Studios’ next game will be. He wrote a short but more to-the-point answer, “I3 or MK12”. In other words, either Injustice 3 or Mortal Kombat 12 will be the studio’s next game. However, we’ve heard rumors of Injustice being in jeopardy before, as we’ve heard that Warner Bros. Discovery, the conglomerate formed by the merger of Warner Media and Discovery, might be selling NetherRealm. That is highly unlikely to happen.

Boon has previously stated that while he will be at The Game Awards 2022 in December, he will not be representing the studio with an announcement. Previously, we could have expected a reveal for Mortal Kombat’s 30th anniversary, but that didn’t happen either. It seems NetherRealm’s next project won’t be announced anytime soon, but given the studio’s history, we’d guess Injustice 3 (the team has been bouncing between the two IPs for the last decade) as their next title.

There are also concerns around this thought, though: rumors have been circulating that NetherRealm should focus on Mortal Kombat 12, as the franchise has performed much better than Injustice, but of course, this is not official…
