MOVIE NEWS – Zack Snyder’s Star Wars-inspired film, Rebel Moon is moving forward, the director has confirmed that principal photography has been completed.

Filming on Zack Snyder’s Rebel Moon has wrapped. Although the director’s vision for the DCU ended prematurely, he now hopes that his work with Netflix can continue for a while, as the shooting of the “mature Star Wars” film is completed. Rebel Moon will be the first of two initial films in what could be a brand new sci-fi franchise if all goes well.

Snyder originally pitched a version of Rebel Moon to Lucasfilm as a possible Star Wars film more than a decade ago. Although the idea was rejected, Snyder kept his plot and adapted it into his original film ten years later. The project is reportedly being made as the first film of a two-part story. Zack Snyder confirmed in a Vero post that principal photography has already wrapped on the film. That’s what he wrote:

“Thank you to everyone who worked on the filming of Rebel Moon. I am humbled by your artistry, your commitment, your incredible hard work and your friendship. Without you, there simply would not be a film. So thank you again! That’s the end of [principal] photography!!! !”

Although not much has been revealed about Rebel Moon yet, one thing has already been reported by many: the huge ensemble cast, which is not lacking in talent. Sofia Boutella, Charlie Hunnam, Ray Fisher, Djimon Hounsou, Jena Malone, Corey Stoll, Ed Skrein, Cleopatra Coleman, Fra Fee, Cary Elwes and Anthony Hopkins have signed on for the epic film.

When it comes to intrigue, Rebel Moon delivers by the bucketful. As a film that could have been part of the Star Wars universe, there will be plenty of comparisons between the two. While it may seem daunting to be going up against one of the world’s biggest film franchises, there’s no doubt that there will be plenty of interest and online discussion behind it. For Netflix, this is exactly the kind of organic promotion they welcome if it encourages viewers to watch the movie themselves.

The story of Rebel Moon is said to take place on a peaceful colony on the edge of the galaxy, threatened by the armies of the tyrannical Regent Belisarius. A young woman with a mysterious past is sent to find warriors from neighboring planets to help them face the tyrant. Snyder previously spoke to The Hollywood Reporter about the film’s inspiration:

“I grew up as an Akira Kurosawa and Star Wars fan. It’s my love of sci-fi and huge adventure. I’m hoping that this will also be a huge IP and a universe to build on… The last two or three I’ve spent years building this universe. Every corner needs to be painted. I’ve been making plans, drawing constantly, and cultivating the fertile ground to realize this world fully.”

Rebel Moon has yet to receive a release date, nor has it been confirmed if the film will receive a limited theatrical release prior to its streaming release.
