The Last Of Us: Series Creators Say There’s No Need To Fear “Game Of Thrones Syndrome”

MOVIE NEWS – Creators Neil Druckmann and Craig Mazin have made it clear that The Last of Us series will stick to the main plot of the original games, and only that.

Ahead of the highly anticipated season premiere of The Last of Us on HBO, some big questions continue to swirl. Some fans are concerned, especially about how the actors will carry the considerable weight of their characters. And how the directors will present the story as a whole. Fortunately, IndieWire reports that co-creators Neil Druckmann and Chernobyl showrunner Craig Mazin have assured audiences that they will stay faithful to the source material. They will not deviate from it with any original, off-the-wall ideas.

Druckmann, the current co-president of game developer Naughty Dog, who also worked on the original games, clarified that despite recent rumours of a possible third instalment in The Last of Us game franchise, there would be absolutely no deviation from the narrative framework of the first two games released.

“We have no plans to tell any stories beyond adapting the games…We won’t run into the same issue as ‘Game of Thrones’ since ‘Part II’ [of the game series] doesn’t end on a cliffhanger.”

Druckmann refers to the profound creative conflicts that have arisen at some point with HBO’s authoritative fantasy series Game of Thrones. By the time the fifth season of the series was due, author George R.R. Martin had not yet finished the next book in the series (and still hasn’t…). Series directors David Benioff and D.B. Weiss have taken it upon themselves to direct the rest of the story, for better or worse.

Unfortunately, Martin has revealed that instead of at least including him in this creative process, Benioff and Weiss cut him out of every subsequent season entirely until the end. This inevitably led to one of the most controversial endings in television history. Which then sparked a massive outcry from fans everywhere. Druckmann and Mazin clearly do not want to make the same mistake and will not seek to add anything ‘original’ to the source material.
