It turns out G-Man can die (technically). Just not in the finished version of Half-Life.
Half-Life left us with a lot of unanswered questions. Like, who or what was G-Man? Exactly how many experiments did Black Mesa run? How did a scientist nerd defeat an army of literal tanks and helicopters? All the security guard clones? Unfortunately, it doesn’t look like we’ll ever get answers to any of these. Although we’ve learned a little more about the G-Man from the sequels and Half-Life: Alyx, he’s still a mystery. However, we have learned some new details about him thanks to a leaked Half-Life: Source asset.
While no information was found about the G-Man himself, the leakers did stumble upon some animations that suggest he was, at some point, envisioned by the developers as an unstoppable bullet-dodging bully rather than a bullet-dodging bully.
As the… Twitter handle Magic Nipples [sigh] has revealed phishers have found an animation that appears to be the death of a mysterious bureaucrat. Perhaps Valve planned to make him killable at some point during the development cycle. Most likely, however, the animation team created the sequence as a backup.
However, while we haven’t learned anything new about G-Man, the leaked information has answered a question many gamers have wondered about since the game’s inception. Remember that ridiculously long train ride you must take as part of the intro sequence? At one point, you pass an Apache helicopter that looks like it’s about to take off. However, the train passes by before it takes to the air. You wonder if the helicopter has really taken off.
It seems that data collectors have found animations showing the helicopter taking off. Unfortunately, there is also an animation showing the helicopter crashing later. It’s not clear if this is the same helicopter or the military one that could be shot down.
Among the other things that were revealed: “Cut Gargantua [animations], cut assassin [animations], full set of animations for ivan, day one animations for gordon, early valve guy textures, hd textures for random shit, and the devtest campaign sources.”
In case you’re wondering, ‘Ivan the Space Biker’ was Gordon Freeman’s original character model.
