Project DW: Nexon Is Working On Another Dungeon & Fighter Game

Not much is known about Project DW, apart from its genre (as the target platforms are not yet entirely defined).

According to Nexon’s announcement, an open-world action RPG based on the Dungeon & Fighter IP is being developed for “consoles, PC and mobile,” and it’s anyone’s guess what the target platforms will be. Not even a release window was disclosed by the South Korean company, which described the franchise in a press release as such:

“Dungeon & Fighter is a PC action RPG featuring dynamic action play. Since its initial launch in August 2005, the Dungeon & Fighter franchise has registered more than 850 million players worldwide. In Korea, Dungeon & Fighter Mobile was released in March 2022 and continues to be extremely popular with players. Multiple other new games are now in development on the Dungeon & Fighter intellectual property, including Project Overkill and Project AK.”

Dungeon & Fighter stands for DNF, which immediately brings to mind Arc System Works’ 2D fighting game DNF Duel, released for PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, and PC at the end of June last year, is tied to this IP. Project AK might not look familiar at first. Still, one of their previously announced projects, Project BBQ, announced in 2018 (!), which developer Neople has adapted into a console-exclusive, retaining the Souls clone style. Project Overkill, also mentioned in the announcement, was first mentioned by Nexon in 2021. It will be a 2.5-dimensional game using Unreal Engine 4 (since then, they might have moved to UE5).

Dungeon & Fighter was launched on PC in August 2005 as an online multiplayer, side-scrolling beat’em up title. In 2012, Dungeon Fighter Live: Fall of Hendon Myre was released as an Xbox Live Arcade exclusive for X360, allowing four players to fight simultaneously with revamped graphics. In 2016, Dungeon & Fighter Spirit arrived in South Korea for mobiles, using 3D models instead of 2D sprites. Released on March 24 last year (also for mobile), Dungeon & Fighter Mobile was its successor, returning to sprite-based graphics.
