MOVIE NEWS – Star Trek 4 is continually delayed, and Chris Pine recently expressed frustration at not knowing when the film might move forward.
Chris Pine recently expressed his frustration with the Star Trek film franchise. It seems that the lack of information is as frustrating for him as it is for film fans. Star Trek is a science fiction media franchise that has been at the forefront of the genre since the eponymous first series debuted in the 1960s.
Most recently, Paramount handled the rights to the films, but Star Trek 4 has been repeatedly delayed, and much to Pine’s chagrin, there’s no telling when, if ever, it will finally be released.
In a recent interview with Esquire, which focused primarily on his role in the new Dungeons and Dragons movie, the Hollywood star briefly revealed where things stand as far as understanding Star Trek 4 is concerned. “I don’t know anything,” Pine explained during the interview. “In ‘Star Trek’ land, the actors are usually the last people to find out anything. I know costume designers that have read scripts before the actors… It’s all par for the course with ‘Star Trek.'”
Pine further outlined his feelings about Star Trek projects. “I would say it’s frustrating. It doesn’t really foster the greatest sense of partnership, but it’s how it’s always been,” he said. “I love the character, the people, the franchise. But to try to change the system in which things are created – I just can’t do it. I don’t have the energy.” The behind-the-scenes creative shifts in the Star Trek franchise’s film projects have sparked much controversy. Various creators have been involved at one point or another, including famed filmmaker Quentin Tarantino, with whom Pine has a good relationship and mutual respect.
Commenting on the recent Star Trek film’s poor performance compared to expectations, Pine remarked that the whole thing “felt cursed”.
“I always thought, Why aren’t we just appealing to this really rabid fan group and making the movie for a good price and going on our merry way, instead of trying to compete with the Marvels of the world?” It’s a wise idea, as parts of the Star Trek timeline that have yet to be explored on screen could be a source of motivation for a fan-centric project.
One possibility is that Star Trek 4 has fallen down the priority queue at Paramount in favour of the series and other content in the franchise. This could easily be the case, given that the last film was underperforming. In addition, the company seems to be looking to make more profit from the streaming sector. A price increase for the Paramount Plus subscription has been announced for the first time. There is no denying the creative slowdown and reduced priorities behind the scenes. It looks like fans will have to wait a long time for the next instalment in the Star Trek reboot franchise.
