As announced by Paramount, the new films in the Transformers and Star Trek sagas are delayed until 2023 and will no longer arrive in 2022

Star Trek and Transformers are the latest in a series of delays that have rocked the movie business since the onset of the global COVID-19 pandemic. Last month, Disney delayed several Marvel films, as well as Indiana Jones 5. Although moviegoers have returned to theatres in recent months, release dates remain uncertain.

The new Star Trek movie, initially scheduled for June 2023, will now be released on December 22 2023. Little is known about the new film, except that it will be directed by Scarlet Witch and Vision’s Matt Shakman and Josh Friedman and Cameron Squires will write the screenplay.

Announced earlier this year, Transformers: Rise of the Beasts will be the first film since 2018. It will be set in Brooklyn circa 1994 and will feature Maximals, Predacons and Terrorcons. Ron Perlman will play Optimus Primal, the leader of the Maximals. The movie finished shooting last month, and interestingly, no reason has been given for the delay. The week that the studio had initially chosen for its release was practically empty of big films, as it arrived in cinemas two weeks after Jurassic World: Dominion and one week after Pixar’s Lightyear. Still, the studio has decided to delay the release of the seventh Transformers movie by almost a year from its original release date. As it stands, it will be released on June 9 2023. However, on this new release date, it sits dangerously between two fairly strong releases, Shazam: Fury of the Gods, which arrives a week earlier, and an untitled Pixar project that launches a week later.

Be that as it may, Brian Robbins, Paramount’s new CEO, has weighed in, saying, “There’s no question that big theatrical movies are the guiding light for franchises. We’re on it, and I don’t really have anything to say because I’m waiting for development. I’m looking forward to getting into it; we’re not there yet, but we’ll get there soon“.
